Following the discovery of an ambassador’s death by stabbing, Prime Minister "Qin Hui" (Jiayin Lei) initiates a swift inquiry led by director "He Li" (Yi Zhang) and his subordinate "Wu Yichun" (Yunpeng Yue, who is quite engaging). The investigation swiftly escalates with the death of the guard captain, replaced by the young "Sun Jun" (Jackson Lee), who identifies "Zhang Da" (Teng Shen) as a possible suspect. Given only two hours to resolve the situation and recover a letter supposedly held within an elaborate leather purse, the initial ninety minutes showcase a skillfully constructed and engaging mystery. Questions arise: Who can be trusted? What is the nature of the plot? What’s in the letter, and who has seen it? Could the beautiful courtesans hold clues to this puzzle? The story moves along briskly and proves quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, the final forty-five minutes lose their way. The characters begin to act awkwardly, and what was once a clever mystery devolves into something of a ridiculous situation, culminating in an anticlimactic and unsatisfactory resolution. Visually, it is impressive; the production values and costumes are well-made and vibrant. However, the film feels excessively long—that’s before even considering the lengthy pre-title credits!
