The film, made between November and December 1976, premiered at Cannes in 1977, "where it won an Award, I might add," and was released in 1978 following some cuts and the addition of a scene. Filming took place on location in London, with interior shots done at the old Lee International Film Studios (Wembely), later known as Fountain Studios—sadly demolished now. I "totally adore" this film, though I admit my opinion is colored by the fact that it was the very first feature film I worked on as a professional child actor. In scenes featuring Mia Farrow (specifically, the playground sequence), my close-up and speaking part were removed during editing after Cannes, one of several changes made to tighten up the pacing, but I can still be spotted four times throughout. Enough about me; let’s move on to the film itself and why I consider it a superb horror movie. The music by Colin Towns is hauntingly beautiful and complements the film perfectly—a rare accomplishment. The cinematography by Peter Hannan is equally stunning, captured using anamorphic lenses, which beautifully conveys the damp winter atmosphere and underscores Julia's (Mia Farrow’s character) vulnerability. I can’t praise Hannan’s work enough; having had the pleasure of working with him on two films, he captures each scene exquisitely. The story is well-constructed and builds to a satisfying climax. It unfolds slowly, so don't anticipate jump scares or excessive gore—there is some, but it’s handled in a much more subtle way; think creepy and sad rather than overtly frightening. All of the cast members deliver excellent performances, including Julian Fellowes, Nigel Havers, Peter Sallis, Keir Dullea, Sophie Ward, Samantha Gates, Ann Michell, Tom Conti, Jill Bennett, among others (see IMDb for a complete list). The film was initially released on VHS only once by MEDIA HOME Entertainment (part of the Herron group) in 1982 and largely forgotten except by devoted fans until Film Historian Simon Fitzjohn discovered an item printed by the BFI back in 2016 and began his mission to secure a re-release. After seven years of dedicated effort, tracking down a copy and falling deeply in love with the film—as I had done over the previous 47 years since my involvement—it was re-released in April 2023 on 4K UHD DVD & Blu-ray by the BFI in the UK, IMPRINT in Australia, Scream Factory in the USA, and Le Chat Qui Fume in France, all as collector’s editions, from a fully restored print taken directly from the original 35mm color film negative that had been stored in Technicolor's vaults. If you appreciate depictions of 1970s London, classic cars (we see Routemaster Buses, Land Rovers, Austin Black Cabs, Mk3 Ford Cortinas, Citron DS models, etc.), a captivating soundtrack, and visually striking filmmaking, then I believe you’ll enjoy FULL CIRCLE (the original UK title), also known as THE HAUNTING OF JULIA (the original US release title in 1981) and the same title used on the 1982 VHS video tape. Directed by Richard Loncraine, my rating for the film is 10 out of 10, both as a die-hard horror fan and as someone who was part of the cast—though it’s not my finest work due to the scene cuts that are visible, it will always remain one of my personal favorites because working with Mia Farrow was wonderful, along with some of my friends from the Barbara Speake Stage School and a great crew.
