The film’s title fits perfectly, transporting viewers to a New York reservation near Quebec where the Mohawk people reside in an area with very few prospects. Many residents manage only to survive on limited government assistance. "Ray," portrayed by Melissa Leo, is raising two children with a husband who enjoys gambling and lives in a run-down motor home that they hope to leave behind soon. When he abandons them, she finds herself struggling financially. Then, through what seems like chance, she encounters "Lila" (Misty Upham), another single parent facing similar hardships. Their first meeting is tense, especially for Ray, but their shared needs quickly lead them to collaborate on smuggling activities across the frozen St. Lawrence River. The items they are moving? People! This illegal operation increases the risks as law enforcement and immigration officials are aware of what's happening and are actively trying to stop it. These women have plans to improve their situations, but can their luck last against the harsh conditions, the difficult landscape, and the authorities’ persistent pursuit? It’s a compelling look at families struggling in communities with little hope. They are caught in a never-ending cycle of poverty that impacts their children as well – particularly young "T.J." (Charlie McDermott), who is emotionally unprepared to take on responsibilities while his mother works to earn enough money to keep them sheltered. A touching connection develops between the two women, evolving from initial animosity into a sense of reliance; director Courtney Hunt captures both the despair and the ambitions of her well-developed characters. It’s not exactly an uplifting film, but it's surprising to think that people from Pakistan would be entering the United States through Canada across a frozen river.
