The film doesn’t truly spark until its final thirty minutes, but even so, this remains an impactful portrayal of how the interviews between the former American leader (Frank Langella) and the eager British interviewer (Michael Sheen) were arranged and carried out. It was Sheen's character who put forward a plan with lawyer "Swifty" Lazar (Toby Jones), suggesting that the president might want to share his perspective. Nixon’s team viewed Frost as an easily handled, less significant figure, and if he could secure the necessary $600,000, they were willing to proceed. There's a period of discussion about the details, but by 1977 everything was finalized, and they began the first of several two-hour recordings. Although it begins well, there’s a sense that Frost might be too inexperienced to get any significant information from his knowledgeable political rival. Fortunately, Frost has James Reston (Sam Rockwell), who clearly opposed Nixon, on his side, and extensive investigation reveals details that will make it increasingly challenging for Nixon to maintain the detached, dignified persona he desires. Langella is particularly impressive; surprisingly, he manages to generate a degree of empathy by the end. That’s consistent with what happened historically, but I felt the depiction of the president was well-done, presenting an image of someone who had complete faith in himself. Sheen performs adequately, as do Matthew Macfadyen, who plays producer John Birt, and Kevin Bacon, portraying Nixon's close advisor and almost devoted follower Jack Brennan. The script has moments of real strength, and as we see Ron Howard’s interpretation of events, it gradually becomes a rather absorbing story to witness and consider.
