This ghost story, written by Julian Fellowes, brings together a strong group of actors for what’s ultimately a pleasant, though predictable, tale unfolding within an English manor house. A young boy called "Tolly" (Alex Etel) goes to live with his upper-class grandmother, "Mrs Oldknow" (Dame Maggie Smith), who is contemplating whether or not to stay in their home after a fire. Upon arriving, the boy finds he can travel back to different points in the house’s past, uncovering long-held secrets. He then becomes involved in an attempt to change events and protect people across both time periods before it's too late. The plot itself borrows heavily from other stories, but the film is visually appealing – the costume and set designers clearly enjoyed portraying the two historical eras – and features a number of recognizable performers, including Timothy Spall, Pauline Collins who delivers a good performance, and brief appearances by Hugh Bonneville, all contributing to this agreeable story that runs for ninety minutes. It's not something you’ll probably remember vividly afterward, but it possesses a certain gentle appeal, and the young Etel interacts well with his more experienced colleagues to create an uplifting film that is worth experiencing.
