I’ve always had a soft spot for legal satire and tricky situations. Robin "Stormy" Weathers is trying really hard to climb the corporate ladder at his law firm, and he wants to do it quickly! By creating some circumstances, Weathers forces himself into a high-profile position. However, just when he believes he’s achieved success, the senior partners give him an impossible case... Directed by Bob Clark and featuring Judd Nelson (as Weathers), Elizabeth Perkins, John Hurt, and Darren McGavin, *From The Hip* is very much a product of the 1980s. With its portrayal of a law firm full of yuppies and Brat Pack star Nelson in the lead role, that’s not surprising. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be appreciated today though; even if it hasn't aged perfectly alongside changing social norms, and even though "Stormy's" legal maneuvers are pretty unbelievable, the film offers a pleasing mix of satire and moral dilemmas within the legal system. It’s genuinely amusing too, at least until John Hurt shows up as an arrogant suspected murderer, completely taking over the movie and shifting its tone to something much darker. It’s possible that this combination just doesn't quite work, considering how poorly rated the film is overall. Perhaps Hurt’s flamboyant, almost unhinged performance simply highlights the weaknesses of the other actors? Regardless, my recent viewing still had me laughing as "Stormy" uses his schemes in court, and I was definitely captivated during the intense final scene when Douglas Benoit, played by Hurt, takes the stand. 7/10
