It’s possible the title is a nod to Roger with Moore affection. Those familiar with the "Mad About the Boy" documentary concerning Sir Noël Coward will recognize the method employed here: a voice actor recreating the subject as he recounts his life story. In this instance, the recently deceased Sir Roger guides us through ninety years of his existence. The film’s strength lies in the fact that he lived during an era when archival footage is relatively accessible, charting his ascent to fame, several marriages, and establishing himself in "The Saint" (following a brief encounter with Lana Turner in 1956) before succeeding Connery as "007." He was evidently fond of filmmaking himself, so we’re treated to home movies showcasing entertaining gatherings at his Swiss residence. With input from his children and those closest to him—rather than the standard collection of movie commentators—this provides a compelling portrait of a man who built a career on appearing somewhat sexist, yet ultimately seems quite different. Beyond one Golden Globe in 1980, awarded for his heartthrob appeal, the film industry didn’t seem to notice that sparkle in his eye or the independent eyebrow, so it's pleasant to remember a star who radiated charm both big and small screen, had no misconceptions about his own imperfections, and clearly didn't take himself too seriously.
