It’s an enjoyable film that I’d happily watch again and suggest to others. Those with an interest in the Jack the Ripper story will likely find this a captivating murder mystery. Johnny Depp, regardless of personal feelings about him, portrays a character who is confused, struggling with addiction, and acting as a detective effectively. Heather Graham manages to bring depth and quality to her part, even though it largely involves playing a woman in need of rescue. The supporting cast primarily consists of older British actors, and the intricate mystery combined with the gradual release of information during the investigation are what truly make the film memorable. Thankfully, while the movie contains some disturbing elements, it avoids being excessively graphic, so very little detracts from the investigative aspects—aside from a somewhat unnecessary romantic subplot.
