Going into this, my only prior experience with The Hughes Brothers was ‘The Book of Eli,’ which I enjoyed to a degree, even though I felt their distinctive visual flair sometimes got in the way of the narrative. This earlier movie reinforced that impression, and it’s still a good film overall. Johnny Depp, who was apparently their fifth choice for the main role, delivers a solid performance; however, I haven't read Alan Moore's original comic, so I can’t judge how well this adaptation holds up against the source material. It does make you wonder what it would have been like had they cast any of their first choices—Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Connery, Jude Law, and Brad Pitt (particularly Day-Lewis or Connery)—instead. The film boasts a strong supporting ensemble, is visually appealing, and remains consistently captivating. I was particularly impressed by Heather Graham’s performance; it's among her strongest work, in my opinion, as well as Ian Holm, Robbie Coltrane, and especially Katlin Cartlidge. It’s a shame she hasn’t been in more movies since then.
