I'm not necessarily someone who loves classic British crime dramas, though I appreciate them occasionally. This particular story is quite somber and bleak, making it ideal for viewing during the darker months of the year, when evenings feel like a throwback to Victorian London with its candlelight ambiance. I thought this was a pleasant film overall, although the conclusion felt excessively tragic for my liking. The journey up to that point was definitely worthwhile, and the dark visuals are exceptionally well-executed—beautiful yet depressing simultaneously. It's another story inspired by Jack the Ripper, essentially fictionalized and loosely drawing on his persona. Nevertheless, it’s a good, effectively told story, and I found it engaging to watch Inspector Abelard piece together the truth behind the killings. In my opinion, the acting was solid with no significant shortcomings, generally maintaining a high level of quality. It's somewhat disappointing that Johnny Depp once again demonstrates his strength in portraying eccentric or even unstable characters. The film isn’t excessively graphic and wouldn’t be categorized as horror. Most of the violence occurs off-screen, although there are a few moments that could be considered slightly “splattery,” particularly for those with sensitivities to such imagery; perhaps serial killer movies aren't their thing. The ending did detract from my overall impression, costing it a star or two, but aside from that, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
