This is a decent Western film. Tod Lohman is wrongly suspected of being responsible for the death of someone connected to the notorious Boyd family. Though he’s an upstanding cowboy, he understands that in these parts, people tend to act quickly and investigate later. Knowing this, he heads south trying to stay alive. During his journey, he encounters Amos Bradley and his adopted daughter, Juanita, a connection which proves important for Tod's fate. Henry Hathaway is at the helm of this film, and what immediately stands out is how well-developed the characters are; it’s more than just a standard Western with something to say, presenting a narrative that isn’t solely dependent on action sequences. However, Hathaway doesn't neglect the action either, delivering an impressive cattle stampede and a chase scene involving Native Americans, complete with heroic leaps over horses, for those who enjoy that kind of thing. Adapted from Charles O. Locke’s novel, The Hell Bent Kid, this version skillfully recounts the story of an innocent and inexperienced young man fleeing prosecution; it's Lohman's innocence that provides the film with its emotional core, all beautifully showcased by Hathaway against the backdrop of the Alabama Hills. The performances are strong across the board from Don Murray, Chill Wills, Diane Varsi, R.G. Armstrong, and a young Dennis Hopper, who all do a good job. It doesn’t quite reach the level of Hathaway's more famous films like True Grit or The Sons Of Katie Elder, but it is still a film I would recommend seeing if you have the chance. 7/10
