I’ve always thought surreal comedy was hard to get into; for me, the humor has to be just right or I won’t laugh at all during an intentionally bizarre movie. Plus, I need to relate to the characters somehow—otherwise, it's difficult to appreciate the enjoyment within all of the craziness. This is my first time seeing a film by Azazel Jacobs, who directed The Lovers and Terri, and he teamed up with Patrick deWitt, the screenwriter for Terri. Michelle Pfeiffer gives a wonderful performance, displaying a wide range of emotions and an acting skill that lets her handle any story easily. She really showed she’s still capable of carrying major films. However, I struggled to enjoy French Exit. The other performances were disappointing—Lucas Hedges felt irritating in his part—and the plot itself didn't grab my attention. It seems like a film people either immediately click with or find difficult to sit through. The nature of surreal comedy means the script is going to be illogical, which might turn some viewers off right away. It’s a very particular kind of humor that doesn’t usually appeal to many people. Jacobs brought deWitt's screenplay to life with dedication, but ultimately it felt like a slow and drawn-out movie that didn’t have enough funny moments. Rating: C-
