It’s difficult to adequately describe just how completely delightful 'French Exit' is. I found myself laughing out loud throughout, charmed by its playful spirit and lightheartedness. The film feels like a wonderful theatrical production, depicting privileged individuals behaving foolishly in opulent settings, seemingly oblivious to the fact that their trivial existence highlights the oddity and beauty of life’s joys, sorrows, and affections. Michelle Pfeiffer delivers an exceptional performance at the heart of the story, brimming with theatrical flair, sharp wit, and melancholy; it would be reason enough on its own to recommend seeing 'French Exit', but the film offers even more satisfaction because of how fully realized it is. The absurd and dreamlike elements are used in a way that consistently works—to elicit laughter at life's silliness while also acknowledging our persistent desire to continue living, despite everything.
