It’s not about fondness for the past; I thought this film was bad when I first saw it at age 12. I am only watching it again because I hadn’t viewed it since then, and most other science fiction films either feel overly familiar or have become burdened by contemporary social messaging. While it's not genuinely good, considering that I'm viewing it in 2022—a time when everything seems to have a specific purpose and characters are defined solely by superficial traits—it manages to be a fairly enjoyable post-apocalyptic story. The main issue is its lack of depth; because of this, the movie falls short. It fails to accomplish what the original material did, or what science fiction should generally achieve: exploring a philosophical concept or social problem and exaggerating it in an accessible and entertaining way.
