It’s one of those movies that makes it tricky to offer an objective assessment. There are moments where it really grabs your attention, but then there are also things that make you pause and wonder. The story unfolds like a straightforward play; characters appear and disappear as planned, and plot elements are brought up and reintroduced as needed. Each character has a clear purpose and allegiance, though their backgrounds aren’t explored beyond what's immediately shown. The violence is intense and more explicit than typical action films, yet it still feels somewhat romanticized and isn’t particularly shocking in its realism. Despite being a suspense film, there’s plenty of slow movement after multiple gunshot wounds, although the arm injury offers a clever twist on conventions seen in 1970s action movies. The visuals and design are striking, as are the facial hairstyles. Comparisons to Tarantino are almost unavoidable, which is pretty standard for a throwback gangster movie filled with pop culture references. Fortunately, it avoids trying to be overly smart and remains relatively straightforward. However, there isn’t much character development either, aside from the intense power struggles on screen. There are other aspects I won't discuss to avoid giving things away that I think deserve consideration; these aren't necessarily positive or negative points but they do exist. Ultimately, I would recommend seeing it just for the stylized action sequences. Just try not to overthink it.
