Reno on Free Birds

7/10 · Jun 24, 2016

Mission Thanksgiving. It's turkey time—time to fight back! It’s certainly an animation that deserves more recognition. I understand Disney has a strong hold on animated movies right now, but this film isn’t quite at their level, though it’s not something you should completely dismiss either. There are imperfections, of course, but they're minor and easy to overlook. With animation, things don’t always have to make sense in the real world, so just relax and enjoy it instead of picking apart every detail. This movie is aimed at kids, but honestly, anyone can appreciate it because it has a lovely story with some genuinely funny moments—as long as you're willing to put aside your adult sensibilities for about ninety minutes. The animation quality is on par with Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, and even Sony’s productions. It’s impressive that a smaller studio could create something like this. I really hope Reel FX continues making animated movies and directly challenges those major companies. There were a lot of well-known actors involved; I didn't recognize most of them, but I knew who they were by their voices. The plot is predictable, admittedly, but it still managed to hold my attention with its entertaining elements. It’s about time travel and is quite enjoyable, directed by the same person who did 'Horton Hears a Who.' Some people are calling it an anti-Thanksgiving film, but I see it as just a fun movie. It's similar to ‘Happy Feet,’ where a group of turkeys tries to escape from humans, but told in a different way—sort of like ‘Penguins of Madagascar.’ I don’t think anyone will regret seeing it, although some people might be disappointed if they have high expectations. All things considered, it was a good movie, even if it wasn't as outstanding as other animated films released that year. I’m looking forward to a sequel about 'mission turducken.' 7/10
