Kathryn Newton really should have been working on something better. *Freaky* is a bit of an uneven experience, and that makes giving it a rating tricky because Newton’s acting is genuinely excellent. It feels like a standard slasher movie for the most part, but her performance is so good it seems wasted in something lesser. She's fantastic here; it’s just really disappointing that the film itself isn't up to her standards. There are a few moments that work well within the slasher genre and Vince Vaughn makes an effort. It was interesting to see him take on a different kind of role, but I thought he was inconsistent—sometimes he did a great job, other times it seemed like he was attempting to mimic a teenage girl, which is in stark contrast to Newton, who handles both of her roles really well. I realize I’m saying the same thing again, but essentially: Newton elevates things considerably, while the movie itself falls short.
