It’s unlikely I’ll revisit this film, and I can’t really advise anyone to watch it. Seeing a younger Jodie Foster was something of an attraction. Although I understand how this movie helped establish the “body swapping” idea—though I'm still not sure it truly originated here—the execution felt rather unimaginative. It seemed like they had the initial thought, "What if a child and their parent switched places?" and then ran out of ideas. The transitions between bodies were genuinely unsettling, and the second one was particularly bewildering, even with explanations provided. Watching this made me consider how challenging it would be to assume someone else’s identity without any preparation. I suspect that's a negative reflection on my experience; I should have been more captivated by the unusual circumstances or challenges involved, but I wasn't. The film isn’t terrible—there’s plenty happening and some of it is good—but it definitely shows its age. Even the action sequences feel somewhat clumsy, though I can see why audiences in 1976 might have been impressed by it. However, I doubt people were discussing it for long afterward. There's a considerable amount of voiceover narration that doesn’t grab your attention, and most of the humor is basic physical comedy based on anticipating what will go wrong next, so engagement is fleeting and the impact fades quickly. The strongest aspect of the film explores the importance of appreciating family members, but it takes the “walk a mile in their shoes” concept to an extreme. There are more effective ways to convey that message, and other movies have explored this trope with greater success. I would recommend the 2003 version instead; this one is simply not very memorable.
