Tod Browning’s *Freaks* carries the same notoriety now that it did when it initially startled audiences in the 1930s. Naturally, some of its power has lessened over time; a contemporary horror enthusiast accustomed to graphic violence might find themselves puzzled by the film’s reputation. Nevertheless, it continues to be an unusual and disturbing work of filmmaking—the kind of picture that would likely be celebrated as a bold and brilliant artistic achievement if someone like David Lynch had created it recently. Browning draws viewers into this strange carnival world populated by people with differences, who are authentically represented by the performers themselves. Their values and principles are revealed, but not in an attempt to elicit pity, rather as a straightforward depiction of their existence. Browning manipulates his audience, introducing hints of romantic relationships and shifting social dynamics, then abruptly subverts expectations with its surprising conclusion. The underlying ideas aren’t profound, though they deserve consideration. Even while the “freaks” relentlessly chase their target through rain and mud, creating a chilling atmosphere and striking visuals, it would be regrettable if important themes like affection and faithfulness were overlooked. 9/10
