I feel like I’m the spider here, and you're the fly, Frankenstein. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed comes from director Terence Fisher and writer Bert Batt, featuring Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, Simon Ward, and Freddie Jones. James Bernard handled the music, while Arthur Grant was in charge of cinematography. This fifth installment within Hammer Film’s Frankenstein collection stands out as one of its finest. The narrative draws inspiration from the original Frankenstein stories, portraying Cushing's Baron Victor Frankenstein as a truly repulsive person who will go to any lengths for his medical ambitions. Devoid of morals and ethics, Frankenstein manipulates young lovers Anna and Karl into assisting him with his ultimate objective—which leads to horrifying consequences for everyone involved. The film benefits greatly from Fisher’s direction; it's not only beautifully atmospheric as a Gothic piece but also incorporates disturbing shocks and even dark humor. Certain moments are remarkably unsettling, capable of affecting your senses deeply, including the controversial scene depicting a sexual predator that some viewers find problematic (I personally believe it effectively demonstrates how far Frankenstein has fallen). The film culminates in an impressive finale where Freddie Jones—delivering a powerfully emotional performance as one of the series’ more compelling “creatures”—and Frankenstein engage in theatrical threats. A presentation of despair, decline, and decay without restraint, Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed represents top-tier Hammer Horror. 8/10
