This version of "Frankenstein" significantly deviates from Mary Shelly's original story. At its heart, the novel serves as a warning about humanity’s overreaching scientific ambition, challenging both divine authority and the natural order. Overall, it is a reasonably good film. The performances are largely excellent, and the creature effects are impressive; however, it’s honest to say that this movie shares very little in common with Shelly's work. The story focuses on an unhealthy dynamic between a father figure and his adopted son, which echoes Victor Frankenstein's own troubled relationship with his parent—particularly in how he treats his creation with indifference and occasional harshness. Whether that’s negative is open to interpretation. As someone who greatly appreciates Shelly’s writing, I was actually rereading "Frankenstein" around the time this film came out, and for me, it felt somewhat incomplete. The bond between the creature and Frankenstein feels noticeably less intricate. The creature in the book is a tragic figure, generally sympathetic but also capable of cunning and even brutality; these qualities are largely missing from this adaptation. Victor Frankenstein comes across more as someone who made a terrible mistake and doesn’t know how to fix it, rather than being intentionally cruel or uncaring. Ultimately, "Frankenstein" only loosely resembles Shelly's exceptional novel. It is certainly an acceptable film, but it should be considered separately from the source material. The central theme takes a different direction. It isn't quite as nuanced in how it portrays the connection between Frankenstein and his creation. Still, it’s worth watching.
