This adaptation of "Frankenstein" significantly strays from Mary Shelly's original story. At its heart, the novel serves as a warning about humankind’s overreaching scientific ambition, challenging both divine authority and the natural order. The film is generally quite good. The performances are largely excellent, and the creature effects are impressive; however, it’s fair to say that this movie has very little in common with Shelly's book. A troubled father-son dynamic forms a central theme, reflecting Victor Frankenstein’s own difficult relationship with his father. This is evident in his harsh and occasionally unkind treatment of the creature he brings into being. Does that make it bad? It really comes down to perspective. As someone who loves Shelly's work, I was actually rereading "Frankenstein" when this film came out, and for me, something felt missing. The bond between the creature and Frankenstein feels noticeably less intricate. The creature in the novel is a tragic figure, ultimately deserving of sympathy, but also capable of deception and brutality. These qualities are largely absent from this version. Victor Frankenstein comes across more as someone who made a terrible mistake and doesn’t know how to fix it, rather than as a cruel or uncaring person. Ultimately, "Frankenstein" only superficially resembles Shelly's exceptional novel. It is an enjoyable film, without question, but should be considered separately from the source material. The core message takes a different direction. It isn’t quite as nuanced in portraying the connection between Frankenstein and his creation. Still, it’s worth watching.
