Mary Shelly’s expansive story, "Frankenstein," functions fundamentally as a warning about humanity's overreaching scientific ambition, challenging both divine authority and the natural order. To begin with, this film is generally quite good. The performances are largely excellent, and so are the creature effects. However, it must be acknowledged that the movie only loosely connects to Shelly’s novel. At its center, I believe, lies a troubled father-son dynamic. Victor Frankenstein's own difficult relationship with his father finds an echo in how he treats his created being, sometimes callously and even harshly. Does this constitute a flaw? Perhaps it hinges on individual perspectives. As someone who greatly appreciates Shelly’s work—I was actually rereading "Frankenstein" when this film came out—it felt somewhat deficient. The connection between the creature and Frankenstein is noticeably less intricate than what's depicted in the book. The creature from the novel emerges as a tragic, ultimately sympathetic character, yet also capable of deception and cruelty. These facets are minimized in this adaptation. Victor Frankenstein comes across more as someone who has made an awful mistake he can’t undo, rather than being openly cruel or uncaring. Ultimately, "Frankenstein" maintains only a superficial connection to Shelly's impressive novel. It is certainly a respectable film, but it should be appreciated on its own terms, separate from the source material. The central theme takes a different direction. It’s not as nuanced when considering the bond between Frankenstein and his creation. Still, it’s worth seeing.
