Considering Netflix's track record with adaptations lately, I wasn’t expecting much when my kids and I decided to watch their version of Frankenstein. To my surprise, it turned out to be quite enjoyable. While the movie doesn't adhere to every aspect of the original novel—and there’s a fair amount of creative license taken—it sticks to the main plot points and captures the essence of the story. The creature is presented as both frightening and sympathetic, showing his role as a victim. I thought the design was very effective, managing to feel believable for a science fiction film. It would have been a letdown if they’d opted for the cartoonish appearance with bolts in his neck that's become so common. The actor portraying Frankenstein did a solid job, though they pushed the character's instability too far. He acted like an abusive father to his creation from the very beginning; it was almost inevitable that things would fall apart. I’m familiar with how poorly the creature is treated in the book, but his experiences felt exaggerated here. Regardless, the visuals and this adaptation of the story were generally well done. Frankenstein's laboratory—or evil hideout, depending on your perspective—looked good. I’d call it a very successful adaptation. It had substance, some gruesome monster action, impressive cinematography, and thankfully avoided any obvious political messaging or woke agendas.
