Frances, approaching her thirties, finds herself navigating the challenges of New York City while pursuing a dance career. She seems to shift between moments of self-doubt and periods of seeming contentment, neither of which truly capture who she is. A long friendship with Sophie has created a sense of ease that feels almost like a marriage—a platonic, sexless connection—making romantic commitments seem distant. Her relationship with Benji illustrates this; they share an intimacy without physical closeness, even though their interactions hint at a willingness to explore something more if the opportunity arose. The film spends eighty minutes documenting Frances’s often amusing attempts to get by and succeed, including a trip to Paris. There's considerable dialogue, which perhaps could have been trimmed to give other aspects of the story room to develop; however, Gerwig performs well, and the movie provides a sharp and humorous look at how difficult life can be when you’re trying to build a career in an unpredictable field—especially one as uncertain as your own existence.
