I’m exactly where I began. Nowhere! Richard Wallace directed Framed (also known as Paula), with a screenplay by Ben Maddow based on a story by Jack Patrick. The cast includes Glenn Ford, Janis Carter, Barry Sullivan, and Edgar Buchanan. Marlin Skiles composed the music, and Burnett Guffey was in charge of cinematography. Mike Lambert (Ford), feeling lost and unsuccessful, encounters waitress Paula Craig (Carter), and from there things seem destined to either improve or decline. A road sign catches your eye—it reads DANGEROUS CURVES! Initially, this refers to a hazardous stretch of road – roads are frequently depicted as dangerous locations in the film – but it’s likely intended as a subtle nod to Janis Carter's seductive character. Paula Craig, portrayed by Carter, commands attention throughout the movie; Ford and Sullivan aren’t insignificant, but ultimately, it feels like both the actress and her character carry the story. Following an energetic opening sequence, the film shifts to a cafe, showcasing Guffey’s visual skills. From this point onward, nearly every scene is shot with a distinct atmosphere. Shutters, shadows, lamps, and jail bars all receive Guffey's stylistic treatment, which complements the developing psychological tensions. Early on, we are presented with two characters who appear to be a deceiver and a dangerous person, while our central character wrestles with his sense of self. He also drinks heavily, but that leads to memory loss—not ideal when you’re trapped in a noir-style town. When analyzed closely, the story is straightforward, which is somewhat surprising considering Ben Maddow also wrote The Asphalt Jungle. However, the characters and their performances, combined with some impressive technical work, more than make up for it – until the ending, which I feel is an unfortunate choice regarding character portrayal. It’s not enough to ruin the film entirely, though; we experience everything from intense pleasure displayed during a heartless crime to characters who seem to need redemption or are facing their ultimate reckoning. 7/10
