The film is captivating! Some viewers might search for imperfections in this suspenseful legal story, but most will find it a compelling exploration centered on the performances of Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. The connection between them feels genuine from their initial encounter in the courtroom, marked by Crawford’s Hannibal Lecter-like request that Beachum straighten his tie. It's remarkable how invested you become, even with the knowledge of the killer's identity from the beginning. While Crawford’s intelligence stretches believability, Hopkins delivers the role in a way that makes his existence entirely plausible. You can clearly sense Beachum’s determination to imprison Crawford for attempting to murder his wife and escaping justice, especially during the hospital scene where he tries to prevent Crawford from disconnecting his wife's ventilator. I felt there was something lacking in the brief romantic involvement between Crawford and Nikki Gardner (played beautifully by Rosamund Pike). Perhaps expanding on their relationship wouldn’t have added anything substantial beyond Crawford’s later request of Gardner’s father, which may explain why it wasn't developed further. Overall, it is a superb courtroom, psychological, and thrilling drama featuring outstanding acting. I also want to acknowledge David Strathairn’s excellent portrayal of DA Lobruto; I would have enjoyed seeing more of his character. If you appreciate an intriguing legal story, definitely watch this film!
