A sudden scream draws police officer Dunnigan’s attention to a man perched on a high-rise hotel ledge. He rushes to the scene and spends nearly ninety minutes attempting to figure out why the young man named Robert is considering jumping. Both men are clearly anxious, but the officer feels he must build some level of connection with him. The man's mother, father, and former fiancée—played by Agnes Moorehead, Robert Keith, and Barbara Bel Geddes respectively—arrive on the scene to offer their perspectives, though not always in a constructive way. As we get to know this individual and his troubled family, it becomes clear that there are significant reasons for his apparent lack of confidence. Below, onlookers watch with fascination, including a group of taxi drivers stuck in traffic, a young man named Danny who finds himself experiencing some romantic possibilities, and Grace Kelly—although her accent occasionally disappears. Basehart and Douglas create an engaging dynamic as the story progresses, and director Henry Hathaway skillfully incorporates secondary storylines to provide moments of respite from the central drama without derailing it. One encounter with a frustratingly foolish clergyman (George MacQuarrie) nearly prompted me to yell at the screen, and by the film’s conclusion, I wasn't certain what would happen. It is tightly controlled, suspenseful, and deserving of viewing.
