I get to be the detective; you’re the damsel. Colin Higgins wrote and directed Foul Play, featuring Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase, Burgess Meredith, Rachel Roberts, Dudley Moore, and Brian Dennehy. The music is by Charles Fox, and David M. Walsh handled the cinematography. Gloria Mundy (Hawn), a San Francisco librarian, finds herself unintentionally caught up with gangsters planning to kill The Pope. Teaming up with the playful police officer Tony Carlson (Chase), she’s trying to survive long enough to figure out why everyone wants her dead! Comedy thrillers are tricky—you have to make people laugh while also keeping them on edge. Colin Higgins manages this well in this enjoyable film from the late 1970s. He doesn't take huge risks, instead mixing together genre elements like quirky villains, an unlikely romantic pairing, physical comedy, close calls, a plot device, and generally absurd situations—both tense and humorous. The movie benefits greatly from a strong cast (Hawn and Chase have fun chemistry, being both appealing and attractive together, and the supporting actors are also excellent), beautiful San Francisco locations, and a catchy 1970s soundtrack; it’s an easygoing film overall. Where else would you see Burgess Meredith and Rachel Roberts in a martial arts fight? It earns a 7/10.
