Barbara Stanwyck remains unparalleled when it comes to westerns, and even with reservations about the story’s direction, she delivers a performance among her finest here. Her character, Jessica, manages a sprawling Arizona ranch from atop a gleaming white horse, supported by a compliant sheriff and her own hired guns. The arrival of Marshall Griff (Barry Sullivan) along with his brothers disrupts this order; they aim to establish some semblance of law while also apprehending her rebellious younger brother. Initially, she hopes he’ll be taken care of by her trigger-happy brother, Brockie (John Ericson), but when that fails, she finds herself drawn to this lawman who refrains from using a weapon – though his brothers are less restrained. It seems they're headed for conflict, but whose methods will ultimately succeed? The film isn’t exceptional, certainly, but it has some noteworthy aspects, beginning with the fairly realistic depiction of a dust storm and Dean Jagger’s portrayal of a sheriff who possesses the backbone of someone inebriated. There is action throughout, and the cinematography effectively utilizes the expansive landscapes to reinforce Jessica's commanding presence and spirited nature. Sullivan, however, perhaps explains why he never achieved major stardom; while adequate, he lacks charisma, which makes it difficult to understand why Jessica would consider him desirable, let alone a potential partner. I’m not convinced that the softly sung songs by Jidge Carroll were necessary, as they didn't improve the film’s momentum. Overall though, this is an attractively presented movie where the star isn't hesitant to perform her own stunts and includes some suggestive lines in the dialogue.
