The film opens with a man dying unexpectedly while on a library ladder. As he was a wealthy individual named "Danemore," his assistant, "Bishop" (Robert Mitchum), sets out to discover the source of his employer’s wealth. Bishop is surprised by how little the widow (Genevieve Page) seems to know, but he finds a possible lead in Vienna. His investigation quickly pulls him into complicated events following the war, leading him to Sweden. There, a recent suicide within a prosperous family, an interest in the daughter of the house "Brita" (Ingrid Thulin), and the actions of his persistent companion "Spring" (Frederic O'Brady) further complicate matters. Mitchum performs well, adopting a restrained acting style, but I didn’t feel that Page or Thulin had much of an effect on a plot where the female characters held considerable significance, more so than in many similar post-war noirs. The film feels overly long and could benefit from a faster pace as it has difficulty generating or maintaining any real drive. There's some attractive cinematography during the story’s travel sequences, and the mystery is reasonably satisfying, though ultimately not particularly memorable.
