This espionage thriller from Alfred Hitchcock unfolds like a swiftly paced puzzle. Joel McCrea portrays "John Jones," an American reporter sent by his editor to cover events in Europe as war looms. Almost immediately upon arrival, he finds himself caught up in the situation surrounding the enigmatic “Peace Party” leader "Van Meer" (Albert Bassermann), who appears to have been shot and might be connected to a treaty that could alter or even prevent a conflict. Along with fellow journalist George Sanders ("ffolliot"), they become increasingly entangled in this complicated mystery, needing to be wary of nearly everyone as they attempt to uncover the truth. Herbert Marshall plays "Fisher," accompanied by his daughter "Carol" (Laraine Day), rounding out the main cast, and the narrative progresses through twists and turns in a well-organized and captivating way. While there are misleading clues, they aren’t extraneous; instead, there's an underlying connection that brings them together as it becomes clearer who can be trusted—and who cannot. The script isn't particularly strong—the involvement of multiple writers occasionally results in some verbose passages that I found a bit disruptive; however, Hitchcock is at his best, and there are numerous suspenseful moments to hold your attention. It’s enjoyable entertainment!
