The idea of family as a source of connection holds true regardless of circumstance. This Swedish dark comedy film centers on a family’s vacation in the French Alps. It wasn't my top choice, but I found it quite enjoyable because of its unique premise. The storytelling is satisfying, complemented by beautiful imagery of a snowy landscape. It didn’t entirely feel like a dark comedy; I did get some genuine laughs—the loud kind. I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly the narrative shifted. It begins as a typical family trip but gradually reveals the hidden aspects of each person's personality. Sometimes, vacations aren't about relaxation; they can alter your life’s trajectory. Your actions, behavior, and presence of mind are crucial elements. Being part of a family requires adjustments, particularly for men in leadership roles. The story is relatively short, structured as five episodes, each dedicated to a single day of the family’s vacation. Every day presented something different. The good times, bad moments, and odd occurrences were all woven into the happy, emotional, and awkward events of that day. Much of the narrative involves discussions about what happened earlier on. How a seemingly content middle-class family evolved into a dysfunctional one is explored later in the film. The settings are primarily the resort or skiing expeditions. Several other characters appear, contributing to more interesting developments. There were some scenes I didn’t need, but they did help establish the vacation atmosphere. > "I spent two years in therapy... And it did not do a damn thing. > Then I screamed for five minutes and felt a hell of a lot better." Just when I thought the film was nearing its end, new plot twists emerged. The final section is what makes this movie memorable, providing an unexpected yet satisfactory resolution. However, most of the humor is concentrated in the first half. I’d welcome a sequel featuring the family on another continent. It shouldn't exclude the character Mats; I appreciated that role—or rather, the red-bearded man who played him. His appearance was brief but impactful. After watching this film, I believe men might be more careful in similar situations. It offers a valuable lesson without requiring you to experience it firsthand. It’s an enjoyable movie, though perhaps not for everyone due to its slow pace. 8/10
