Roger Moore’s finest work within his own James Bond series includes this film and *The Spy Who Loved Me*, and I understand why. It doesn't reach the extreme heights of absurdity found in *Moonraker* (which ranks among the least successful Bond films), nor does it descend into the silliness present in some of his other appearances. However, those who appreciate Moore’s style will find that it still delivers the characteristic moments of ridiculousness he’s known for. It's simply well-made. *For Your Eyes Only* feels like a Roger Moore film that could exist independently of the 007 series and remain worthwhile on its own merits. The tone is somewhat darker, with a greater sense of realism and emphasis on narrative—yet it retains the familiar lightheartedness associated with his films, but with a more substantial storyline. While *The Spy Who Loved Me* represents Moore’s ultimate achievement in the 007 world, *For Your Eyes Only* nearly surpasses it. Even as someone who strongly prefers Sean Connery as Bond, I consider this to be among the very best installments of the franchise.
