James Bond, portrayed by Roger Moore, is on a mission to recover a missing British encryption device before the Soviets can get their hands on it. The story unfolds across various locations, beginning in the Ionian Sea and progressing through Spain, Northern Italy, a Greek Island, Albania, and finally an isolated mountaintop monastery in Greece (Meteora). “For Your Eyes Only” (1981) steps back from the over-the-top nature of its predecessor, “Moonraker” (1979), but it still includes the expected Bond elements and ridiculousness, making for another solid entry in Moore’s seven-film series (1973-1985). The film features high-society gatherings by a pool, car chases down mountainsides, exciting skiing sequences, ice skating scenes, underwater mysteries, and an exhilarating climb near a cliff. As with any Bond movie, there are attractive women in the cast; Carole Bouquet plays Melina, a grieving brunette, while Lynn-Holly Johnson portrays bubbly teen figure skater Bibi. Some viewers may not like Lynn-Holly’s performance as Bibi, but I thought she was one of the best aspects of the film and stands out among the ‘Bond girls.’ Her innocent and energetic personality provides a good contrast to Melina's subdued sadness. James’ line to Bibi – “Well, you get your clothes on and I'll buy you an ice cream” – is particularly memorable. Johnson was 21 or 22 years old during filming, while her character was approximately 16 or 17. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 7 minutes. GRADE: A-
