Kevin Bacon plays "Ren," who leaves city life for a quiet town governed by the strict preacher "Moore" (John Lithgow). In this place, dancing, singing, and most forms of recreation have been outlawed, supposedly to shield the community and its children from negative influences. Ren quickly finds himself facing suspicion upon arrival, but Ariel’s interest in him changes things; however, when it becomes clear that she's involved with this newcomer who challenges their way of life, conflict arises. He has a difficult time finding employment and dealing with local boys who are jealous of his James Dean-esque demeanor. The situation escalates when he suggests lifting the ban so they can have "Footloose." While the plot is comparable to films like "Flashdance" (1983) and builds on the popularity that began with “Fame” (and its theme song), the performances and writing are unremarkable. Ultimately, it feels more like a movie about its soundtrack—which includes songs such as the title track, "Let's Hear It for the Boy," and Bonnie Tyler’s "Holding Out for a Hero"—accompanied by an upbeat score and energetic dancing from Bacon and Singer. Though it was a significant film in its day, launching several careers, that initial appeal has faded over time, making it something I prefer to listen to rather than see.
