"Fool’s Gold," appearing in 2008, features Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson as a couple heading toward separation while vacationing in the Bahamas; he's pursuing lost treasure. Donald Sutherland portrays Hudson's wealthy employer, and Alexis Dziena plays his daughter, who is portrayed as somewhat frivolous. Ray Winstone and Kevin Hart are also involved as possible antagonists. The film combines elements of serious underwater adventures like "The Deep" and the two "Into the Blue" movies with a significant amount of comedy and over-the-top action sequences—it’s essentially “The Goonies” but with adults in a tropical setting. McConaughey and Hudson are appealing, both visually and as a pairing, and the supporting cast is generally agreeable, even those playing the bad guys. The main issue is its length; at an hour and fifty-two minutes, it feels drawn out. A lighthearted film like this would have been better suited to a runtime of roughly eighty-five to one hundred minutes. The story unfolds in or near the Bahamas, although filming actually occurred on Queensland’s east coast, which is noticeable. While that coastline is beautiful, it doesn't quite capture the richness of the Caribbean islands. Still, the scenery alone makes the film worth seeing, particularly when the weather outside isn't great. Overall, it's an enjoyable island movie with romance, a treasure hunt, and some adventure, but its length feels excessive given how silly it is. If you’re looking for something more authentic in the oceanic thriller genre, I suggest checking out "Into the Blue 2: The Reef" from 2009; in my opinion, it surpasses the original "Into the Blue" from 2005.
