"Focus" feels like two separate films joined together, and they’re about equally weighted. One part is a film centered on swindlers, tricksters, and those who live by deception—similar in style to movies like "The Sting," "Ocean's Eleven," "House of Games," and "Shade." The other component is a romantic comedy featuring two people who are drawn to each other but struggle with trust. The portion dealing with the con artists is genuinely impressive. The schemes and scams are inventive, carried out skillfully with precision and expertise. The dramatic twists and turns involving deception are handled effectively. The characters deceive their targets, each other, and even the viewers with grace and assurance. The visuals, movement, and cutting are sharp. The reveals feel believable within the movie’s own logic. The romantic comedy isn't terrible, but it falls short. It’s easy to understand and accept the attraction between the two leads. Will Smith portrays a character who is physically attractive, intelligent, self-assured, accomplished, and affluent. Margot Robbie plays a character who is beautiful, alluring, sensitive, bright, and delightful. However, the main events in their romantic storyline—the typical “boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets her back”—seem forced. The interesting element of their connection (how can two con artists with a history of tricking one another build trust?) isn't developed enough. Instead, there’s a breakup without clear explanation, a recurring joke about a wallet, and an improbable coincidence that suggests one of them has a secret plan involving the other. Their relationship is strongest when they are outsmarting each other, but it ultimately lacks closure. From a technical standpoint, the film is exceptionally well-made. The cinematography, settings, costumes, cosmetics, editing, and sound—everything is refined. It’s a movie that deserves to be watched again, not just to follow the cons, but also to notice some of the subtle hints dropped along the way.
