It seems appropriate that I turned down Disney’s request for me to spend 33% more on my Disney+ subscription, because this is the final movie from them that I’ve seen. It embodies the average quality of what used to be a groundbreaking studio known for lively and imaginative animation—and it offers up something that feels like a film Jerry Lewis could have made in the sixties if he had been in charge of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"—and no, “Flubber” isn’t even a sea mammal! The movie depends heavily on Robin Williams's somewhat irritating portrayal of the eccentric scientist "Prof. Brainard," who is trying to prevent his school from shutting down by inventing something amazing. But he has other problems too; his girlfriend "Sara" (Marcia Gay Harden) may be interested in someone else. What he does manage to produce is the substance that gives the movie its name, a very flexible, green goo that can do everything from supporting weight to stretching out enormously. Understandably, this draws attention from competitors and so he now has to deal with two challenges: protecting his invention and keeping his girlfriend. There’s only so much Williams' talent can accomplish before the entire thing just gets bogged down in its own green mess. The writing is almost childish, and even a flying car isn't enough to pull it out of a rather predictable storyline. It’s quick and simple, but honestly, there’s nothing original about it at all!
