This summer’s THE END OF OAK STREET feels like a big-budget action film constructed with considerable skill, but ultimately held back by its own conflicting aims. The dinosaur sequences are genuinely exciting, and Anne Hathaway provides a sense of seriousness that helps ground the proceedings; Michael Giacchino's music greatly enhances most of the action scenes, and it’s enjoyable to see the craftsmanship inspired by Amblin films. However, when the movie attempts to add substantial emotional weight to a story designed primarily for entertainment, the flaws become apparent and aren't resolved. Establishing an appropriate tone is essentially making a commitment to viewers about what they should experience, and even a single departure from that can damage the positive impression a film has created.
