It ultimately feels like a missed opportunity. *Flora & Ulysses* isn’t terrible to look at, but the film fails to make good use of its initial idea or showcase Matilda Lawler’s talent as much as it could have. I was quite taken with her performance, particularly in the beginning. The cast around her includes Ben Schwartz, who is adequate, and Alyson Hannigan, who is pleasant, as she often is. Considering how intriguing the starting point is, the movie hardly explores Ulysses' powers at all—the few times it does, like the scene at the diner, the effects and slow motion are well done. Instead, they center on a family storyline that just didn’t hold my interest. I did appreciate seeing the comic book graphics appear on screen, though. Maybe other viewers will get something out of this, and if so, that's fine. Personally, it felt pretty ordinary and not particularly memorable.
