John Carney consistently delivers films that appeal to music enthusiasts, and his newest release is sure to continue that trend. “Flora and Son” is a welcome addition to his film catalog (“Once,” “Begin Again,” “Sing Street”), presenting a straightforward narrative accessible to viewers of all ages. Flora (Eve Hewson) is a spirited, recently divorced mother raising Max (Orén Kinlan), a teenage boy with a history of behavioral issues. They reside in a modest apartment in Dublin, and Flora is striving to guide her son toward a successful future. When she discovers a discarded guitar, she rescues it and gives it to Max. Initially rejected, the instrument later sparks his interest when Flora begins online guitar lessons from an instructor located far away. A warm connection develops between Flora and her teacher Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and eventually mother and son find themselves creating music together. The film possesses a delightful quality with a relaxed feel that is both cheerful and heartwarming. Carney’s thoughtful writing keeps the story believable, preventing it from becoming overly sentimental. While undeniably optimistic in tone, the characters are well-crafted and possess a surprising amount of complexity, and the casting choices were excellent. Hewson and Kinlan display genuine chemistry as mother and son, and her interactions with Gordon-Levitt feel equally authentic. Jack Reynor provides welcome comedic moments as Flora’s former partner, while the unconventional romantic aspects of the story portray a type of love—and mutual respect—that doesn't necessarily require characters to become a couple. The original songs (also composed by Carney) are just as memorable and upbeat as always, and the final concert scene will leave you feeling elated. There’s much to appreciate about this film for numerous reasons. Carney has a recognizable approach, and while his latest work shares commonalities with his previous endeavors, it still feels fresh. It's another story centered around individuals connected by their passion for music creation; however, "Flora and Son" also highlights the importance of motherhood. The ending might feel somewhat predictable and emotionally charged, particularly for mothers, but that shouldn’t deter you from seeing it, because despite a few minor flaws, there is much to enjoy.
