The narrative stretches believability at times, yet I still found myself enjoying it considerably. "Flora" (Eve Hewson) has a complicated and often contentious connection with her fourteen-year-old son, “Max” (Orén Kinlan), as she navigates financial hardship while his father, "Ian" (Jack Reynor), is living with a new girlfriend who seems to have adopted a Spanish persona. “Max” embodies the familiar traits of a difficult child: engaging in minor theft, pursuing a girl who shows no interest, and generally pushing “Flora” to her limits. One afternoon after work, she discovers a damaged guitar discarded in a dumpster. After adding a ribbon and presenting it as a belated birthday present, she pays eighteen euros for it. His lack of enthusiasm leads her to try playing herself, eventually connecting with "Jeff" (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an online guitar instructor from California who doesn't seem overly studious or awkward. It’s their developing rapport that gradually helps her gain a broader perspective on her current problems and begin to establish better connections with “Max” and with his father, whom she still seems to hold in some regard. I observed a compelling interplay between Hewson and Kinlan – although I can't imagine ever communicating with my mother, or vice versa, using such spirited language! The story is infused with anger and bitterness, but also moments of humor and an unusual form of tenderness. Reynor’s role feels largely decorative—which isn’t necessarily a negative—but I would have appreciated more from him, as well as from Gordon-Levitt, who composed several songs and performed them, along with the rest of the cast. This film functions primarily as a character study; it's imperfect and perhaps somewhat unrealistic, but they cleverly utilized what must have been a very limited production budget to prioritize the story’s focus on the characters, who are genuinely appealing. Perhaps a theatrical release was unnecessary, but it’s definitely worth watching.
