The film "Kuba," starring Mateusz Banasiuk as the titular character alongside Marta Nieradkiewicz as his girlfriend Sylwia, depicts a stifling life shared with his mother. His swimming routine provides an escape, leading to some unusual encounters in the restroom facilities. During one evening out with Sylwia, boredom sets in at an art gallery event where he shares marijuana with Michal, portrayed by Bartosz Gelner. An intense attraction develops, and Kuba begins testing limits with this young man who is also facing personal difficulties. The narrative poses the question: will Kuba make a decision or opt for something more conventional? The pacing feels sluggish at times, marked by drawn-out shots and moments of introspection from Kuba that become tiresome. The conclusion is deeply disturbing—horrific in almost every way possible—and left me questioning the value of the preceding ninety minutes. It completely undermines any understanding we might have gained about the protagonist and eliminates any empathy one could feel for him. It’s disappointing, because this film had the potential to be much more meaningful and memorable, but ultimately it falls short.
