I'm not entirely certain how I feel about *'Flickering Lights'*. The film has a peculiar atmosphere that persists throughout, and there’s an unusual combination of story elements that don’t completely gel – however, I genuinely like it... or maybe I do. At times, if I were to shut out the sound, it would seem like one kind of movie entirely, while blocking out the audio, it would appear as something else. What I'm trying to say is, the music doesn’t always align with what’s happening on screen. The score itself isn't bad; however, the more intense musical cues don't quite suit the gritty nature of the story. That being said, I really appreciate how the film starts and concludes, and how everything connects in a clever way. The movie also makes excellent use of flashbacks. The performances are consistently strong. Søren Pilmark is a capable lead, with Ulrich Thomsen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Nikolaj Lie Kaas, among others, performing well alongside him. I will mention that the subplot involving Mikkelsen and Sofie Gråbøl felt awkward; it resolves in a disappointing way... particularly considering *that* scene with Pilmark’s Torkild, which should have led to a different resolution. It's noteworthy that Thomsen, Mikkelsen, and director Anders Thomas Jensen would collaborate on *'Adam's Apple'* five years later. One of the flashbacks in this film bears a striking resemblance to that 2005 movie, which was likely influenced by the short story used as its basis. Overall, it’s a very good release from 2000; though it does leave me with a somewhat peculiar feeling.
