Lord "Arnolfini" (Fernando Hilbeck) makes an error in judgment when he pledges a substantial reward to mercenary leader "Martin" (Rutger Hauer) in exchange for assisting him in reclaiming his castle, but then goes back on his word. As a result of this agreement, "Martin" and his group attack a caravan transporting his son, "Steven" (Tom Burlinson), and fiancée, "Agnes" (Jennifer Jason Leigh). She suffers a violent assault at the hands of the men, with their leader quickly asserting ownership over her. Their journey leads them to another castle that they plan to seize, unaware that the army previously employed by Lord Arnolfini is pursuing them. Should he manage to catch up, we might witness an exciting siege sequence. This proves to be a diverting drama featuring numerous scenes of rough and sometimes crude action which realistically portrays how a band of 16th-century adventurers might have acted. The young "Steven" displays some interesting skills in engineering and explosives; Jennifer Jason Leigh fully embraces her role with considerable energy, and Hauer’s performance is reminiscent of his work in “Ladyhawke”—also released this year—as he delivers lines sparingly while commanding attention on screen. It does feel somewhat lengthy, but the action picks up considerably once it begins, presenting numerous perilous situations for everyone involved. The film has a resemblance to a spaghetti fantasy and although perhaps slightly repetitive, I found it quite entertaining.
