This movie completely captivated me. Jonas Rasmussen’s connection to Amin—who is an Afghani forced to flee his country during its civil war because his father was among those disappeared, using a term reminiscent of Chile's experience under Pinochet—is the starting point. It might seem like a standard setup, but it’s far from it. Amin, now in his thirties and living in Denmark with a boyfriend who wants to marry him, finds that he needs to face what happened to him and a deeply buried secret if he's going to feel okay about his life. This film grew out of that need. Adding another layer, Rasmussen chose to animate much of the movie to shield the actors from potential danger posed by the Taliban. The reason? It’s a documentary based on actual events.
