Everyone has a story worth sharing, and “Flee” presents the deeply personal account of an Afghan refugee's experiences with hardship and the search for a more promising life. Director Jonas Poher Rasmussen uses animation to depict a conversation between himself and his unnamed friend, “Amin,” whose life has been extraordinarily challenging. Amin describes his dramatic history in his own words, starting from when he was a young boy in Afghanistan during the 1980s up to the remarkable journey that shaped him into the person he is now. The hand-drawn animation serves as an artistic way of telling this man’s story while also safeguarding his anonymity. Amin's life, largely spent evading danger, unfolds through a series of astonishing events that are distressing, deeply saddening, and ultimately uplifting. The fact that someone could endure all of this and still be resilient is a demonstration of the human capacity to survive, and I was hoping he would eventually find some peace (you’ll need to see the film yourself to discover if that occurs). Rasmussen's compassion for his subject proves essential in creating this impactful documentary. Amin feels at ease sharing with him, and revisiting so many difficult memories about the suffering he and his family faced throughout their lives contributes to a very serious atmosphere. From his parents turning to human trafficking so their children could receive an education to the sorrow of leaving their homeland for Russia during a period of instability in Kabul, this refugee story covers more than ten years and explores the lasting psychological impact of a life spent fleeing persecution while seeking freedom. “Flee” is a personal history made visible, and Amin ultimately discloses a secret he has never revealed to anyone else. It’s an emotional release for a man facing his painful past so that he can move toward a more hopeful future, as well as his desire to locate somewhere he can finally consider home.
