Laura Harring is the initial female supervisor at the London Diamond Corporation, yet her evident abilities don’t seem to matter; she appears to have hit a ceiling in her professional life. Repeatedly bypassed for advancement by less capable men, she grows disheartened and becomes an easy mark for "Hobbs" (Sir Michael Caine), who has been carefully developing a scheme for some time. The movie doesn't spend much time on the robbery itself; it’s enough to say that when they discover their vault is empty one morning, those in charge are quite upset and boss “Ashtoncroft” (Joss Ackland) definitely requires his morning drink! They bring in "Finch" (Lambert Wilson) to look into what happened, and he quickly finds himself intrigued by the anxious Laura, who’s just as shocked by the magnitude of the theft. The central question is – where did all the diamonds disappear to? It's a fairly intriguing concept reminiscent of "11 Harrowhouse" (1974), but the film moves at a deliberate speed and the combination of Moore and Caine doesn't generate much chemistry. There’s some commentary on corporate greed, sexism, and favoritism, exposing questionable industrial and insurance dealings that feel like a case of everyone pretending something valuable is there when it isn't, but the story feels somewhat thin and the film's uninspired ending pretty well encapsulates its shortcomings. It’s easy enough to watch, but ultimately unremarkable.
