Flatliners (2017) isn't really a remake; it’s closer to an indirect continuation of the 1990 film, keeping just the central concept of people experimenting with being close to death. The movie presents new characters and a different storyline, but it doesn't quite succeed because the personalities aren't well-developed and the story moves too quickly. Even though the actors do a good job—Elliot Page stands out in particular—the film isn’t as profound or well-organized as the earlier one. The marketing campaign was deceptive, and tenuous links to the original probably led to some unfair judgments. It's acceptable if you view it separately, but it doesn't reach a level of true quality.
